What is the 50/30/20 rule?

It is a simple way to split your take-home pay: half for essentials, 30% for things you enjoy and 20% for saving or paying off debt. It is a starting point, not a strict rule.

If you live in an expensive city and rent takes a lot, try 60/25/15 or 65/25/10. What matters is that savings are not zero and that you set them aside on payday.

Frequently asked questions

Is it based on gross or net pay?

On net pay: what reaches your account after tax and deductions. If you get bonuses, add their monthly share or treat them as extra savings.

Does debt go under needs or savings?

The minimum payment goes under needs, because you have to pay it no matter what. Anything extra you pay to clear it sooner counts as savings.
